Letter grades and percentages are easy to understand and provide a benchmark for students and parents, but descriptive feedback is also valuable for highlighting strengths, areas for improvement, and learning growth. Combining both approaches gives the clearest picture of a student’s progress at any grade level.

Question 9

Professional development days for teachers and other school board staff are negotiated locally. Do you believe your school board currently has negotiated the right number of professional development days? If not, what changes would you like to advocate for?

Rather than focusing solely on the number of PD days, my priority would be ensuring that the quality and alignment of professional learning directly support classroom needs and the broader goals of the division. Ultimately, the goal is not just to increase or decrease PD days, but to make each one meaningful, data-informed, and beneficial to both educators and students.
